Trixie & the Ranch is a fictional photographic narrative about the lengths people go to belong, and the truths they discover about themselves along the way. Trixie, a lonely, wealthy city slicker has dreamt about a "simpler" life out West. When personal tragedy strikes, she takes the biggest risk of her life: she buys a ranch in Montana sight-unseen and plans to reinvent herself as a cowgirl. There is nothing simple about finding your place in a tight-knit, rural town, and belonging involves a lot more than swapping Louboutins for a pair of cowboy boots.
With forty-six large scale photographs, Trixie & the Ranch is a collection of self-portraits, still-life, and landscape images. With narrative allusions, it weaves many possible stories and outcomes. Campy and tongue-in-cheek, it also explores the larger and more serious themes of loneliness, vulnerability, and, ultimately, self-acceptance.
